TV Version

When you look at people who are considered attractive, whether they are male or female, they have certain traits in common. One of them is high cheeks and a long, triangular appearance to the lower face. A strong chin is desirable in obtaining this attractive triangular appearance. If you look at models or people considered attractive, it is unlikely that you will find any with a weak chin.

As unfair as it may be, a weak chin is one of the first things that people notice as it sets the tone for the whole face. People with weak chins are mistakenly perceived as being unauthoritative and less influential.

Chin Incision
Example of Chin Incision.
Larger Implants require an incision below the chin. Most implants can be inserted through the mouth without a visible incision.
Fortunately, chin augmentation is very predictable and effective with little downtime. It is performed by making a small incision within the mouth and placing a silicone implant directly on top of the chin. It can also be done through an incision below the chin in conjunction with a neck lift. Patients who require very large implants may need incision to be placed below the chin, within submental crease.

The results of the chin implant are very impressive as it adds significantly to the contour and profile of the face. In addition, by making the chin larger it makes the nose appear relatively smaller and gives length to the entire face, all of which significantly enhance facial appearance.

Some people have what is called retrognathia which means recessed jaw. In this case the entire jaw is setback and may need to be repositioned forward. This is a much bigger procedure and is not discussed here. For the most part, however, a simple chin implant is all that is necessary.

Chin Augmentation
Chin implant can be done with neck lift to create a more dramatic enhancement.
Chin Augmentation
Before & After

The majority of chin implants are made out of silicone. They are firm but soft. Dr. Cruise uses silicone exclusively but there are other types of materials such as Medpor which is made out of porous polyethylene. Silicone has the advantage of more precise placement and it can come out very easy if necessary.

There are also different shapes of implants. To simply things, we will discuss the three major shapes that are most common.

  • The Central Anatomic Chin Implant
Central Chin Implant
Central Anatomic Chin Implant. Useful for enhancing chin projection and creating more elegant, triangular facial appearance.

This type of chin implant is excellent for projecting the central chin. It enhances chin projection and gives the face a more triangular look. Because it is small it is easier to insert through the mouth and it causes less swelling.

  • The Extended Anatomic Chin Implant

This implant is similar to the central chin implant but has extensions that travel further up the jaw line. This implant fills in the jaw line and gives a little more width to the chin as well as chin projection. In addition it give the face a more elegant, triangular shape.

Extended Anatomic Chin Implant
Extended Anatomic Chin Implant. Useful for enhancing chin projection and creating a more defined jaw line as well as more triangular appearance to the face.
  • The Mild Square Jaw Chin Implant
Square Jaw
Square Jaw Chin Implant. Useful for creating a more masculine, authoritative chin in addition to enhancing chin projection.

This implants also has an extension that travels up the jaw line but it is wider. As the name implies it gives the jaw a more square look. This is very useful for men who want a more authoritative look.
